The drawing I made for Emily sucks.

It's horrible. You can see pencil strokes everywhere. The face is half the width it should be. The nose has no curves to it. The teeth are growing out of the lips. The tongue curves around and disappears into nowhere. The ear is too big. The hair is completely off. The skull was cut off at the top. One of the shoulders is way too broad. The girl has no boobs. The sleeves curve unrealistically. One of the bracelets is too thick.

I'm starting over with a clean sheet of paper. There's no way I'd show the first draft to anyone else, especially Emily, who I hardly know well enough to show crappy stuff to. (The crappy stuff is reserved to immediate family, and Lawrence, whose bad attitude about everything I create I now take in a stride, and pathetically yearn for--some day he'll have to say I'm good at something other than French.)

It already looks better, though. I assessed what was wrong with the first draft, and have been making sure I don't make the same mistakes this time. For example, I started with the neck this time, whereas with the first draft, I started with the bottom of the shirt. When I slightly messed up the proportions with the shirt, I was forced to make the neck and head less wide, making the whole thing look awful.

I'm actually pretty proud of this one so far. I mean, the mouth is a little small, and the nose a little big, but the whole skull has a much better shape to it. The hair looks somewhat realistic, and the eyes look pretty good. The mouth has some really good details. The shoulders and shirt are sized correctly, and the hips curve to the side like they do in the photo I'm working with. The bits of the pants and belt that show are the right size and shape.

Well, I'm going back to work. This chica needs some arms.

(1:03 PM--One hour later.)

I'm finished, and I'm not feeling too bad about the final product. The one thing that jumps out at me is that he neck is a bit too short, but to fix that would require complete reconstruction of her head, which I'm not going to do.

I like her. I'm proud. I think I'll send my letter to Emily after school on Wednesday, so I can show her off in French (Lawrence and Kenna must see it). I will be sad to part with it, but it's definitely for her. I'm not going to change my plans when I've spent so much time completing them.
