Rant of a Scarhead
Apr. 24th, 2004 10:05 pmI am having big problems with the prospective ships for Harry in the Harry Potter fandom at the moment. Why is the fandom split between Hermione and Ginny or Malfoy and Snape? Must I list the ways in which each of these pairs are wrong?
Hermione. Nice gal, and smart too, but she disagrees with Harry too much for him to like her. A boy has his ego, you know. Also, the only time he said that she was pretty was at the Yule Ball -- and he also said that he didn't even recognize her. All he said was that she was pretty, he hardly described the girl with Viktor after that word, and he couldn't even tell that this "pretty" girl was the Hermione he had known for three and a half years! This must tell the reader something -- Harry does not think Hermione is pretty. This isn't because he thinks she is ugly, in my opinion, it is because he thinks of her as his big sister (big because she makes him stop and think, rather than the other way around), but there isn't a case for that, it's just a feeling many readers get. However, it should not be disputed that Harry likes Hermione in any way other than a friend -- there is no canon to back it up, and even less movie canon, which is apparently where Kloves is allowed to majorly foreshadow in extremely obvious ways. *coughhugandhandshakecough*
Ginny. Best friend's sister. She winced when Neville danced all over her toes, but we have no idea whether she was even pretty or not in Harry's eyes on the night of the Yule Ball. She also has no backbone when it comes to Harry, as shown when she talks to him in the library in OotP. To calm him down, she gives him chocolate and tells him she will ask Fred and George to help him find a way to do what he wants. She doesn't tell him that it might not be a good idea or even really try to help him herself, she simply goes along with him and volunteers others to help.
Draco Malfoy. Where have we seen any canon evidence of gayness on Harry's part? We haven't. There is no more that needs to be said after that.
Severus Snape. Again, what gives you the idea that Harry is gay? Not to mention that Harry has never had any good feelings for Snape, and at the moment in the series he is pissed as hell at the man who is old enough to be his father.
I don't mind reading any of these ships, to be honest. But it really gets my goat when Harry thinks about someone while at the Dursleys before anything else has had a chance to happen and decides that he is in love with them. That is totally unrealistic. As of this moment in the Harry Potter series, this moment being after the publication of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry does not have a crush on anyone -- except possibly Cho Chang, which still something that has to be developed in a fanfiction rather than stated on the first page.
Basically any ship can be developed in a fanfic, and I have no qualms about reading about ships I don't ship (I bet that last bit sure confused some of you non-fandom scarheads out there, heh heh), but I honestly do not think that anyone is going to end up with Harry if the series continues like this. The only females he has described as beautiful are either Cho, too giggly to be likeable, or of veela descent, and Hermione is the only female Harry's age that has stood up to him yet stood by him enough to be loved. JKR hasn't given us anything to go on for any ship that couldn't mean the exact opposite.
This really is a rant, isn't it? I jumped around a bit, staying on the topic of relationships, but straying from my original complaint of a split-ship fandom with bad choices for their ships. Awesome! For some reason I tend to stay extremely on-topic in my rants, which has been bugging me, so it's majorly fabulous that I didn't this time. ^^
Yeah, anyway...
